We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Giampino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I personally feel that starting your own business is one of the most humbling, but rewarding, things you can ever do. The work itself, at least in my case, is the most amazing part of it. I couldn’t imagine anything better than creating timeless work for a living. The toughest part is the back end.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would characterize myself as a traditional sign painter that is striving to bring authenticity to this growing city. I’m creating classic signage that will be here far longer than I. I look forward to my kiddo walking past my work when I’m long gone and telling people her dad made that. As far as what keeps me busy painting, it could be anything from hours on a coffee shop door to a logo on a tarmac. It keeps me sharp because each job comes with its own challenges. Sometimes I’ll think I bit off more than I can chew, but in the end it’s good because I’ll learn some new tricks.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Trophy brewing is the first spot on the list that I would take them. Then probably hit el Toro for some legit tacos or pho far east for a slamming bowl of Pho, and then end it with a piece of Hayes Barton’s cake.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give my wife the biggest shoutout to be honest. She has stood by me every step of the way. She allowed me to explore my craft and dial it in. I can’t thank her enough for believing in what I wanted to make happen. I also have to give huge praise to Chris Powers and David Lockwood of Trophy Brewing for giving me an amazing space to learn the trade and always believing in my wacky ideas. All my close friends get the last shoutout for helping to inspire me everyday. Whether it’s the amazing craftsmanship of Quercus, Brian’s woodworking skills at Rebuild, the art of Mr Toomes, the video creations of Bruno, or the drive of Juan Matta, they keep me motivated. The list goes on and on.
