Meet Jontue Stansbury | Braid Specialist & Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jontue Stansbury and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jontue, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting GrippedbyTue as a Black college student at an HBCU was driven by the desire to turn my passion for braiding into a source of income and financial freedom. I saw it as a way to not only express my creativity and cultural identity but also gain flexibility and control over my schedule while balancing school. The support of my HBCU community has been crucial in helping me build my client base and expand my network. My goal is to create a business that reflects empowerment and financial independence, showing that young Black entrepreneurs can succeed on their own terms. In the long term, I envision GrippedbyTue growing beyond just braids, possibly offering beauty products, tutorials, or expanding into a full-service salon.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Managing my braiding business, Grippedbytue , while juggling 18 credits at North Carolina A&T has been difficult, but it has also been one of my biggest joys. I am committed to graduating CUM LAUDE this spring with a degree in Health Services Management, which is preparing me for a career in nursing. I’ve learned a lot about time management, perseverance, and confidence from running my business, and these skills will help me in my education and future profession. I’m constantly working to improve my skills, learn new things, and develop myself, whether I’m preparing for tests or braiding hair. My enthusiasm for healthcare and entrepreneurship keeps me going despite the genuine struggle and sleepless evenings. I’m pleased with my progress, and I know that these events are laying the groundwork for my future.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends and I would probably be going to G.H.O.E.,The Greatest Homecoming on Earth, at North Carolina A&T if we were out late on a night like this. From sunrise to sunset, we would enjoy the energy that made G.H.O.E. iconic while attending the performance, tailgating, and party. Nothing compares to the thrill of being surrounded by Aggies, alumni, and visitors from all over the country, all of who have come together to create a memorable experience. The ultimate celebration of Black culture, tradition, and pride, G.H.O.E. is a must-see whether you’re ever in Greensboro, NC or are considering enrolling in an HBCU.
AGGIE PRIDE!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my amazing friend and business secretary, Amiyah Witherspoon, for always supporting me and encouraging me through every step of my journey! Your dedication, hard work, and belief in me have made all the difference. I couldn’t have made it this far without you whether it’s keeping me organized, lifting me up when I’m feeling down, or helping me balance everything.
