We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmine Handy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly I was tired of working for other people knowing I have a lot of different talents it was just time . I’ll never forget quitting my full time to do hair full time it’s been 8 years total & I wouldn’t change a thing . Best decision I ever made was believing in myself starting my business from the ground up !

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a small city named Gulfport MS . I grew up mostly in the projects in my younger years that’s where I really found myself . From hair to music I been doing both for a very long time !! I been braiding since I was 9 years old . Grown people use to come get there hair done by a kid lol that’s how good I was . When I was about 6 I use to write poems from that I turned it to music I went to Pensacola Fl for the summer with family & that’s where I picked up my love for music . It was because of my Uncle Reggie having a studio in the basement I really found my talent and that was rapping . Every school I ever went to I bet you a million dollars they knew I rapped lol I was really a bleacher girl I loved to freestyle . That’s my talent I’ll literally rap about anything off the top of my head . Me and my cousin started our rap group the Mississippi girls and from there I never gave up . We moved to Raleigh Nc after hurricane Katrina in which we lost everything . I really had to start my whole life over including music . The hardest challenge I ever had honestly was not believing in myself . Like I always doubt myself it took a long time to make myself a boss ! I’m so blessed to be able to say I’m a boss ! Like little me coming from where I come from doing the things I do I have a salon and that alone makes me super proud . I didn’t grow up with my mom or dad I grew up with family so having my kids under one roof makes me proud ! Being a mama period makes me the person I am today ! One thing I always tell people it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it . As long as you remain genuine & true to yourself you’ll always go far ! See me I believe in Karma so I live everyday trying to do right . I want to always receive good karma bc I believe what goes around comes around ! I want the world to know I’m more then just hair and music I’m a walking icon and I know my story one day will be felt and heard ! Whether I’m doing your hair or you listening to my music YOU LISTENING!!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly I love downtown Raleigh ! One thing about me I’m not a club person but I love to eat . We’ll definitely have to hit Glenwood to find a nice restaurant and of course bar hop ! I also love getting massages . Every week I go to #KneadDat massage therapy! I’m a stay home play cards smoke my hookah type of person it’s always a vibe when you at the house ! That’s how you save money and stay out of shit lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shoutout my partner. It’s not easy running a business taking care of kids and having your house in order ! I’ll always give credit where it’s due ! Without my fiancé I don’t think I’ll be able to accomplish everything I have this far ! Big shoutout to Jones from music to kids to business he’s all in and for that he deserves all the recognition!
