We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalia Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started Bump and Bloom Doula Services here in Charlotte, I was driven by a passion for supporting families through one of the most significant experiences of their lives—childbirth. As I spent more time learning about the birthing process and connecting with expecting parents, I realized that there was a real need for more personalized, compassionate care in our community. I wanted to create a space where families didn’t just receive medical care, but felt truly supported, heard, and empowered throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.

The process of starting this business was about offering families not just knowledge, but emotional and physical support in a way that feels nurturing and holistic. I wanted to give parents the tools to make informed decisions, but also provide that steady presence of calm and reassurance when things felt uncertain. I believe that every family deserves to have a positive, informed, and empowered birth experience, and I wanted to create a service that honors that for our community here in Charlotte.”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What truly sets Bump and Bloom apart is the personal connection we build with each family we serve. I approach every family as individuals, recognizing that each pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience is unique. It’s not just about providing information or guidance—it’s about meeting parents where they are, truly listening to their needs, and offering the emotional and physical support that feels right for them. We focus on empowering families to make informed decisions and helping them feel confident and at peace throughout the entire journey, no matter how their story unfolds.

I am most proud of the deep connections I’ve made with the families I’ve worked with. Seeing the positive impact my services have on their experience, whether it’s a calm, supported birth or simply helping them feel more confident about their choices, is incredibly rewarding. I’m also excited to see Bump and Bloom growing and evolving, from working one-on-one with families to expanding into a community of support for expectant parents here in Charlotte. There’s so much potential for growth, and I’m looking forward to reaching more families and building a community that truly cares about the whole family’s well-being.

The journey to where I am today wasn’t easy. There were moments of self-doubt, fear, and uncertainty. Starting a business, especially in the birth work field, requires a lot of learning, resilience, and a willingness to push through challenges. But through it all, I had an incredible support system—my mom and stepdad, my friends, and the families I’ve worked with have all played a huge role in helping me stay focused and committed to my purpose.

I started off as a Career Nanny and began by really immersing myself in the birth world, getting the training and certifications I needed, and then focusing on building trust within the community. As word spread, I started gaining more clients, and I began to realize just how important this work was, not just for the families, but for me as well. I was fulfilling my true purpose, and that kept me going through the tough times.

Starting a business is never easy. There were moments of financial stress, the challenge of managing time and energy, and the hurdles that come with balancing entrepreneurship with personal life. One of the biggest challenges was trusting myself and my abilities—there were plenty of moments where imposter syndrome crept in. But what kept me going was remembering why I started in the first place: to make a difference in people’s lives.

I overcame the challenges by leaning on my support system—especially my mom and stepdad, who are both entrepreneurs and taught me the importance of persistence. I also leaned into the community of doulas and birth professionals, who have been incredibly supportive and generous in sharing resources, advice, and encouragement. And, I kept reminding myself that growth takes time, and every small step forward is still progress.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that building a business is about so much more than just the services you offer—it’s about building relationships and trust. Your reputation and the connections you make are everything. I’ve also learned that you can’t do it all on your own. It’s okay to ask for help and lean on others when needed. And lastly, I’ve learned the importance of self-care. As much as I give to others, I need to make sure I’m also taking care of myself to be the best support I can be for my clients.

I want the world to know that Bump and Bloom is about more than just birth—it’s about supporting families in a holistic, individualized way, and guiding them to feel confident and empowered in their own journey. My story is one of following my passion, overcoming doubts, and finding my true calling in a field that brings me immense fulfillment. I’ve been fortunate to work with families who trust me to support them through one of the most intimate experiences of their lives, and I’m deeply grateful for every opportunity I’ve had to serve.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I reflect on starting Bump and Bloom Doula Services, I can’t help but think of the incredible people who have supported me every step of the way—especially my mom and stepdad. Their unwavering belief in me, even when I doubted myself, gave me the strength to pursue this path. They’ve always been my biggest cheerleaders, guiding me with love, wisdom, and endless encouragement.

I’m also deeply grateful for the friends and families I’ve had the honor of working with—many of whom have become like family. Their trust in me, their stories, and the shared experiences of supporting them through such intimate moments have helped me find my true purpose. It’s because of them that I’ve come to fully understand the profound impact of this work and how important it is to provide a safe, nurturing, and informed space for families. The support I’ve received from these incredible people has truly shaped my journey, and I’m so thankful to have them by my side as I continue this work.
