We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboni Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eboni, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I really wanted to assist families in my community. My birth was not exactly what I wanted, even though it was still an amazing birth. Experiences during my birth showed me that if you walk into that space without the confidence to advocate for yourself, or have a person on your birth team who knows the ins and outs of birth; that things can go left really fast. We have a tendency to just do what medical professionals suggest or tell us to do, and sadly providers often do not practice true informed consent. I wanted to have a business that not only assisted people during one of the most important days of their life, but to also teach them what questions to ask ANY provider, and to also educate them on the options they have and the risks and benefits each option has so they truly know which option is best for their family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My business ranges from fertility support for couples, especially through the power of herbs and detoxification. From there two huge components of my business are birth doula support and placenta encapsulation services and training classes. My birth services include encapsulation or lotus birth for those who are wanting either of those. Additionally, I offer abortion support and I am a Cannadoula. I am also a childbirth educator and I am working on adding a father specific portion class. Lastly, I am a certified Peristeam facilitator, which essentially means I offer customized vaginal steam plans and that can help with fertility and management of pain and conditions that can affect the reproductive system like Fibroids and Endometriosis. Men can steam too for prostate health! What sets me apart I believe is my background. I have a degree in Biology so I spent many years writing and reading reports and data. When I furthered that with my Masters in STEM Ed it just strengthened my ability to interpret data and that allowed me to really grow confident in evidence based practices. I really lean on what the evidence says and I bring that information to my families so they are able to make an informed decision. I got to where I am by just taking my time and remaining consistent. I have continued my education with more and more trainings over the years as well. It definitely has been difficult at time finding a work/life balance and during the busy seasons it can be a lot but I love it regardless! My husband and family have been really supportive so that makes it easier to get through those times. One big lesson I’ve learned is that you cannot say yes to everyone. I started out really wanting to work with any family that was looking for support. It is important for a family to click with their doula, but it is also so important for the doula to click with the family. I really wanted to share my story so people can know that there are people out there legitimately working to help the maternal mortality crisis in this country.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is funny because my best friend has lived in California for the past 5 years basically and just moved back to the area. So I would start the night at have to go to Mezcalitos because their drinks are AMAZING and their food is pretty good also. We would also do an escape room at Bull City Escape to get our brains moving. From there we would either go to Annexe or Unscripted Hotel. Annexe is more of a mixed vibe and plays a lot of music from the earlier 2010’s and is just a cute space to be in. If I’m more so looking for music that is a bit more up to date we would visit the Unscripted Hotel.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, becoming a placenta encapsulation specialist with Woman’s Choice Perinatal Services, which is owned by Ashanti Rivera; changed my entire business. Placenta encapsulation is a service that can be provided in the postpartum period that has a wide variety of potential benefits for the birthing person. Ashanti was also my mentor and she was so informative and supportive. More importantly for me though, she boosted my confidence as a birth worker because these spaces can be intimidating, I also became a encapsulation trainer as well within the program and that allowed me to train doulas in my area and virtually. Ashanti really changed my business and I am so grateful for her and her business savvy.
