Meet Dusta Rhymes | Entrepreneur and Podcast Host

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dusta Rhymes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dusta, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started Down Home Dirt Podcast, I was driven by a combination of passion and a desire to solve a problem I had experienced myself. I saw a gap in the information available to help entrepreneurs start a business that aligned with my interests and skills, and I believed I could make a meaningful impact by sharing stories, resources and connecting people.
Initially, I conducted thorough research to understand my target audience and their needs. I wanted to create something that not only fulfilled a demand but also resonated with people on a personal level. This led me to develop a clear vision and mission for the podcast.
I reflected on my own values—innovation, education, and community engagement were key themes for me. I wanted to build a brand that not only succeeded commercially but also contributed positively to society.
Taking the leap was daunting, but I was motivated by the possibility of turning my ideas into reality and the chance to create something that would bring joy and value to others. Ultimately, it was a blend of personal passion, opportunity, and a commitment to making a difference that fueled my entrepreneurial journey.
What should our readers know about your business?
Down Home Dirt Podcast stands out from other entrepreneurship podcasts by focusing on the authentic, grassroots stories of everyday entrepreneurs who have faced and overcome real challenges. Rather than just highlighting success stories, we delve into the struggles, failures, and lessons learned along the way, creating a relatable narrative that resonates with listeners. Each episode emphasizes the importance of resilience and adaptability, showcasing how our guests navigated obstacles and turned setbacks into stepping stones. My journey in learning how to podcast has been a process of discovery itself—experimenting with formats, honing our interviewing skills, and understanding my audience’s needs. These experiences have taught me valuable lessons about vulnerability, community, and the power of sharing genuine stories, ultimately creating a podcast that not only inspires but also fosters a sense of connection among entrepreneurs at all stages of their journeys.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A visit to Raleigh, NC is a feast for the senses, offering a sophisticated blend of high-end dining, exquisite cocktail bars, and vibrant entertainment options. We start the morning at Sitti, where we savor a luxurious brunch featuring Lebanese-inspired dishes like za’atar omelets and freshly baked pita. For lunch, we would treat ourselves to a culinary experience at La Farm Bakery, known for its artisan breads and upscale sandwiches, all crafted with local ingredients.
In the afternoon, we would immerse ourselves in the cultural scene by visiting the North Carolina Museum of Art, where we can enjoy both classic and contemporary art in a stunning setting or visit Dorothea Dix Park.
As evening falls, we prepare for an exceptional dining experience at Gravy, where Italian comfort food meets fine dining, or at Death and Taxes, celebrated for its wood-fired dishes and seasonal ingredients. After dinner, we would head to The Haymaker, a chic cocktail bar renowned for its craft cocktails and inviting atmosphere.
For entertainment, we can catch a show at Thalian Hall or enjoy live music at The Pour House Music Hall. For something more laid-back, we would attend a wine tasting at Vinos Finos. With its blend of culinary delights, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife, a visit to Raleigh promises an unforgettable experience that caters to every taste.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey into owning a business and hosting Down Home Dirt podcast has been profoundly shaped by the unwavering support of my family and a close-knit network of entrepreneurial friends. From the very beginning, my family encouraged me to pursue my passions and take calculated risks, instilling in me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone. Their belief in my vision provided a solid foundation during the challenging moments. Additionally, my friends, who are also entrepreneurs, offered invaluable insights and shared their own experiences, which helped me navigate the complexities of starting a business. Their camaraderie created an environment of collaboration, where we exchanged ideas and supported each other’s ventures. Whether it was brainstorming podcast topics or discussing business strategies over coffee, their encouragement and advice were instrumental in shaping my path. This strong support system not only motivated me to take the plunge but also enriched my journey, making it a more rewarding and fulfilling experience.
