Meet Dr. Denise Simonelli | Doctor of Pharmacy, Educator, Orton-Gilligham Certified Reading/Dyslexia Specialist, I-ASC Spellers Practioner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Denise Simonelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Denise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The decision to start Reading Tutor Rx and Accelerate Academy came from a very personal place. As a mother of a child with severe dyslexia, I experienced firsthand how traditional education systems often fall short in supporting neurodiverse learners. I realized there was a real gap in services for children with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences—especially programs that are evidence-based, individualized, and delivered with empathy.
With a background in pharmacy and a passion for education, I began studying structured literacy and became certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach. I founded Reading Tutor Rx to provide the kind of support I once desperately needed for my child—specialized, one-on-one instruction that works.
As the demand grew, Accelerate Academy was born to expand that mission even further, offering not only academic intervention but also enrichment programs, executive function coaching, and social-emotional learning support. My thought process was always guided by one core belief: every child deserves to learn in a way that makes sense for them. I wanted to create a place where struggling learners could feel seen, supported, and successful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been anything but traditional. I started as a Doctor of Pharmacy, but my path shifted dramatically when my son was diagnosed with severe dyslexia. As a mother, I was heartbroken watching him struggle in environments that didn’t understand or support the way he learned. That experience lit a fire in me. I immersed myself in dyslexia research, pursued Orton-Gillingham training, and eventually earned both Associate and Certified Level credentials. That’s how Reading Tutor Rx was born—a business built on turning personal adversity into purpose.
What sets my work apart is that everything I do is grounded in both science and empathy. I’m not just an educator—I’m a parent who’s lived this journey. I understand what it’s like to fight for your child’s education, to sit in IEP meetings and feel unheard, and to want nothing more than to see your child succeed on their terms.
Reading Tutor Rx focuses on one-on-one, evidence-based literacy instruction, while Accelerate Academy expands on that mission, supporting not just reading but executive functioning, academic coaching, and specialized support for neurodiverse learners, including those with autism, ADHD, and apraxia. I’m especially proud of the work we’re doing to incorporate Spelling to Communicate (S2C) methods, opening new doors for non-speaking and minimally speaking students.
The journey hasn’t been easy. Like any entrepreneur, I’ve faced setbacks—moments of burnout, financial risk, and professional pushback. But every challenge taught me something valuable: that clarity of mission, resilience, and a deep connection to your “why” can get you through anything.
What I want the world to know is this: My story isn’t just about tutoring. It’s about changing the narrative for children who learn differently. It’s about proving that with the right approach, every child can thrive. My brand is built on advocacy, empowerment, and the unwavering belief that education should work for all learners, not just the ones who fit the mold.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1: Welcome to Charlotte!
We’d start with brunch at Snooze A.M. Eatery or Ruby Sunshine—because you can’t explore on an empty stomach. Then, I’d take them for a relaxing walk through Freedom Park or the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. For dinner, it’s pizza night at Lorenzo’s Pizzeria (of course!) where my family’s recipes and hospitality make everyone feel at home.
Day 2: Uptown Adventure
We’d spend the day in Uptown Charlotte—checking out the Mint Museum, NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Levine Museum of the New South. For dinner, Mert’s Heart and Soul for some of the best Southern comfort food around, followed by rooftop drinks at Merchant & Trade with skyline views.
Day 3: Day Trip to Asheville
We’d hit the road for a scenic trip to Asheville. A tour of the Biltmore Estate, lunch at White Duck Taco Shop, and a little exploring in the arts district. On the way back, we’d stop at Lookout Brewing for local craft beer and music.
Day 4: Lake Life
It’s time to unwind at Lake Norman—kayaking, paddleboarding, or just relaxing dockside. Lunch at Hello, Sailor is a must (get the hush puppies!). At night, a chill backyard dinner with wine, fire pit, and maybe a pizza or two from Lorenzo’s.
Day 5: Arts & Shopping
We’d explore Camp North End—a funky mix of food, art, and innovation. Then swing through SouthPark Mall for a little upscale retail therapy. Dinner at The Crunkleton for hand-crafted cocktails and an elegant vibe.
Day 6: Kids, Learning & Giving Back
As an educator, I’d take them to Discovery Place Science—it’s not just for kids, it’s genuinely cool! Then maybe we’d do a volunteer project or reading event through Reading Tutor Rx or Accelerate Academy, just to share a little of what I do.
Day 7: Spa & Sendoff
To end the week right, a spa day at The Ballantyne Hotel—massage, facial, the works. One final dinner at Kindred in Davidson—delicious food, candlelight, and a toast to an amazing week in the Queen City!
Charlotte and its surroundings have so much to offer—great food, amazing people, and a mix of Southern charm with modern energy. It’s the perfect place to create memories that stick with you long after you leave.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have played a role in my journey, but if I had to dedicate a shoutout, it would go first and foremost to my son. His struggles with severe dyslexia were the catalyst that changed the entire trajectory of my life and career. Watching his resilience and determination inspired me to dive headfirst into the world of specialized education and ultimately led to the creation of Reading Tutor Rx and Accelerate Academy.
I also want to recognize the incredible families who entrusted me with their children’s learning, many of whom supported me from day one and continue to believe in our mission. Their encouragement, word-of-mouth referrals, and genuine care have helped build a community I’m proud of.
A special thank you goes to the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, whose training gave me the tools to make a real difference. And of course, my own family—especially my husband—for their unwavering support and belief in me, even during the most challenging moments.
No success is ever truly solo. I’m grateful for every student, parent, mentor, and loved one who’s walked this journey with me. They all deserve recognition in my story.
