We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominic Adonis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominic, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
A clear sign that the clock is ticking, I believe, is when you start to lose happiness in the things you do everyday. Once you realize the things you’re doing are feeling forced and not bringing pure joy or happiness.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an artist- but I am also the art.

So as you know I’m a cosmetologist, or hairstylist, but I am also a model.
So being behind the chair.. it is my duty to make my clients vision come to life, just as it is my job to make my director’s vision also come to life, when I’m in the chair.

Professionally- I got to where I am, as cliche as it always sounds- by hard work and dedicating my time to a direct focus. Originally, I’m from the west coast, so upon moving here, I didn’t really know anyone. So word of mouth was out, referrals were out. No, if I wanted something for myself to happen. I knew I had to specifically go out and grab it to ensure it would not only happen, but in fact happen the way I wanted it to.

I had to build my success from scratch. No hand outs!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is such a tricky question because I am such the planner and very by the clock-militant, but also because I am always the one asking what’s there to do, and what’s going on! But from the places I have been, I would say On a:

Friday night, we would first go shop, then out to eat obviously, then dance off all the food at either TinRoof, or Legends.
Saturday night, I would first see if “Let’s Get Social Raleigh” has any events going on, then still either dance the night away, or head back and watch a movie night in with wine, chips and pizza.
Sunday.. brunch at the Black Ivory.
As for the other days, they’ll just have to take the lead on those, haha,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can gladly dedicate most of my success to is my mother and brother! They are my backbone always pushing me to chase my dream- and definitely a grand part in my origin story!
