We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Flegal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diana, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After retiring from the Literary Agency I had worked with for 18 years, I decided to use my mentoring skills to guide writers through their write-to-publish journey as a writers coach and free lance editor.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Literary Agent, it was an honor to represent my clients and match their manuscripts with the right publishing home– and a real joy to know I played a part in getting their books into print. Now, as a writers coach and freelance editor, I continue cheerleading writers on their way to securing an agent or polishing their manuscripts to attract a publisher or get them ready for self-publishing with my business partner, Eddie Jones (Reality Coaching for Writers). Eddie and I largely work in the Christian and Inspirational markets. My most recent editing contracts have been with dynamic high-energy entrepreneurs with fresh takes on doing business and life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live on Pleasure Island, south of Wilmington, NC, and on Carolina Beach. As a pescatarian, I have landed in true paradise! Daily visits to the beach, fresh seafood, and the laid-back island environment are food for anyone’s soul and conducive to creativity. I am even doing some writing of my own! Also, there is no end to editing opportunities here since everyone I meet seems to be writing their life story. There are a lot of activities to choose from here on the island: things like pickleball, yoga at the lake, collecting shells and shark teeth, or visiting the many farm-to-table restaurants, but sitting on the beach with a novel is my favorite way to pass the time. I did find a great church, and a Steeler Bar, Joe’s Oasis, where I can eat authentic food from Pittsburgh, PA, cheer for the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates, and loudly sing our team fight songs while ringing black and gold cow bells! But honestly, when friends visit, beach time and taking the Fort Fisher Ferry over to Southport for dinner are the things we enjoy the most.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am forever grateful for the mentorship of Joyce Hart and her taking a chance on me by adding me to their agency roster.
