We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Peise and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Earth Designs Studio began as a hobby. I have always been creative but never really started to put my creativity to work until my children grew up and I was at the tail end of dealing with 3 breast cancer diagnoses that involved 8 surgeries. I also suffer from migraine headaches. So going with my creative flow has been challenging at times. Once I launched my Etsy Shop and participated in some live events, I realized that there is an audience for my art, which has boosted my confidence about getting my pieces out there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My more recent works have been focused on mosaics and hanging beaded mobiles. My creations are always inspired by nature and elements from the earth. In my mobiles I create some polymer clay pieces that are unique. I put those elements together with other glass, metal, silver, ceramic beads, trinkets and connectors that I source from around the globe. I do a lot of custom work and like to theme art according to my customer’s requests. I have learned to be patient and deliberate in finding just the right elements to include. A rushed piece just does not convey artistically the same way that one that is thoughtfully planned and crafted.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am all about supporting my health and nurturing my spirit.  One of my favorite things about where I live in North Carolina is that I have access to beautiful areas where I can hike and spend time outdoors.  The perfect day with a friend would be to take in maybe a hot yoga class in the morning or a hike in one of the areas beautiful parks or greenways followed by a great meal at Fiction Kitchen, Irregardless Cafe or one of the other fantastic local restaurants.  I always look for new openings that have more healthy food options.  I also enjoy the area museums, historic sites and passing exhibits.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Dieter, has always been my number one cheerleader in my craft and in life. If not for his encouragement and support, my creative freedom would have been much more limited. He is currently undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, which has been rough on him. Thankfully he has an incredible team in place that are guiding him through his path back to wellness. And as he has supported me through challenges I have overcome in life, I am his main source of support in his recovery process.
