We had the good fortune of connecting with David Schearer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Be my own boss. You spend your time and efforts to work for someone else. Nothing wrong with that by any means but for me it just wasn’t satisfying my desire to want more and with 4 kids I want to show them that you can create and live your own dream.

What should our readers know about your business?
I currently own Farmers & Merchants restaurant in Wendell. The crazy thing about this was I designed this place back in 2019 for the original owners. It was a crazy journey to design a place then come back to it over three years later to own it. we are a small restaurant located in downtown Wendell that offers a variety of food. We change our menu seasonally however, we always keep core items that sell well. We try to use seasonal flavors when we do add new menu items. We also offer weekend, chef specials, and try to use as many local products as possible. Opening a restaurant is no easy task by any means even when it is an existing restaurant. Any ownership of a new business offers an array of challenges and obstacles you must overcome. One piece of advice I will give to anyone else no matter how much do you think you got it figured out before you get a place open things are gonna pop up that you were unaware of, and you will definitely be taken by surprise more than once. Key is to just keep grinding and get it figured out

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well obviously go to Farmers & Merchants for a meal. I would probably stay local. Visit Whistlestop Cafe, Bearded Bee Brewery. I’m an avid golfer so we would golf some area courses. I would probably hit Jordan Lake & go kayaking & fishing. I’m an outdoor guy so as much outside as possible

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father & mother. They moved us to North Carolina in 1987 and my father worked for ReMax real estate for a short stent, and then started his own real estate company. They both worked extremely hard to get where they were today and to make sure we did not go without. So they were remarkable role models.
