We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Beaty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is to stay true to who you are. It’s easy to get caught up in trends and fads and want to piggy back off of quick success, especially as the maker of what most consider to be a high-end luxury item. However, the real trick to longevity is finding your niche and developing that into a relatable and desirable art form.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My jewelry is ocean and nautically inspired. I typically pick a coastal region somewhere across the globe and deep dive into their culture and traditions, with a desire to reflect that back in my work. My current collection available for sale is heavy with Polynesian and Hawaiian heritage, but I’m also working on a new collection that includes much of the Mediterranean. Geometric designs and pops of bold color via gemstones will help relay the feel of the sun drenched shores along the coasts of Greece and Italy.

It’s important to me that my jewelry tells a story. The art of adornment is timeless and has permeated the heritage of every people the world over. It is a tactile and personal art form, and my goal is to ensure that those traditions live on in my work. I value quality over quantity, ethos over commercialism and ethical over environmentally destructive practices.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being in the Outer Banks, we showcase an endless supply of things to do, places to explore and wonderful eateries. One of my favorite places is the NC Aquarium in Manteo, NC which is also the home of N.E.S.T, a sea turtle rehabilitation program. Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head offers education & summer camps for kids, world class fishing, event rentals and a NC Aquarium gift shop. Lastly, the Outer Banks is home to a parade of the most widely recognized lighthouses and the U.S. Lifesaving Service maritime history. Live demonstrations of how the members of that service rescued stranded mariners take place during the summer time at the Chicamacomico Island Life Saving Station in Rodanthe, NC.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The road to success is paved with the lessons of those who came before me. That being said, I wouldn’t be where I am professionally without the tutelage from another amazing artist. Kristin Anderson, of Kristinworks & Long Dream Gallery lives and works along the beautiful Gulf Coast in a small town called Apalachicola, Florida. I took my initial metalsmithing lessons with her and right from day one, she taught me to have a discerning eye for detail and to not be lazy in my efforts to build quality jewelry. Her studio was this dreamy space built to resemble a ships wheelhouse, nestled in the woods along the water. She had a studio routine that went by the clock, and she kept it each morning, which told me a lot about her work ethic. At the end of my time with her, she sent me off with a small portable workbench, a few tools and a hunger to keep learning. I haven’t seen her in many years, but the effect she had on me as an artist and a jeweler has been indelible.
