Meet Cody Aulidge | Real Estate Social Marketing Director, Freelance Photographer, Storyteller

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Aulidge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in a small country town just outside of Nashville, TN, where music and the arts were woven into the fabric of everyday life. From a young age, I was drawn to music, singing, and any form of creative expression—I even dreamed of acting and traveling the world as a singer. My early days were filled with creating home movies and taking photos with my mom’s camera, which laid the groundwork for a lifelong passion for storytelling.
Initially, I pursued a degree in music education, but I soon realized that my true calling was in connecting with people and sharing stories. I switched to Public Relations, a field that offered both job security and a platform to leverage my communication skills. Even during college, I couldn’t resist the creative pull: I took a photography class, experimented with design using Canva, and eventually deepened my skills with a graphic design course. My experience working in social media for my university’s student-run news department only solidified my love for storytelling.
Today, my career has evolved into a vibrant mix of freelance photography, social media management, graphic design, and content creation. I help real estate agents with their branding and marketing, serve as a creative force on the board of a local community chorale, and work with organizations like the LGBTQIA+ Center to elevate their brand and mission. While I once envisioned a future on stage as a singer, I’ve found profound fulfillment in using my diverse skills to empower others and tell meaningful stories.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a constantly evolving journey rather than a fixed style—I’m always exploring new techniques and pushing myself to learn and adapt. I believe that creativity shouldn’t be confined by trends; instead, it should grow with each new experience. This philosophy has guided me through diverse projects, from seeing my designs on billboards and printed programs to crafting engaging social media campaigns that capture attention and spark conversation.
One of my favorite projects was in college during an advanced event management class. I had the opportunity to plan a professional social media conference in Chattanooga, TN—designing every visual element from the website and social content to the banners and lanyards. Watching that project come to life was exhilarating and affirmed my love for storytelling. Equally meaningful was my time interning at a history museum in my hometown, where I led a complete rebrand. Transforming every facet of their visual identity—from the logo to the website and marketing materials—was deeply rewarding, merging my passion for history with my creative skills.
A pivotal moment in my career came when I was hired as the social media manager for my university’s student-run news department. That role not only honed my photography and graphic design skills but also revealed my true passion for authentic storytelling. It became clear that while technical skills are important, it’s the ability to connect with people and share genuine stories that truly sets my work apart.
My journey hasn’t always been easy. Despite my diverse portfolio and leadership experiences, I encountered my share of setbacks—facing toxic work environments and micromanaging bosses that tested my resolve. But through every challenge, I learned the importance of resilience. I realized that every failure is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and push myself to become a better version of who I was yesterday.
In essence, I’m driven by a commitment to constant growth, resilience, and authentic storytelling. Whether it’s through my freelance photography, social media campaigns for real estate, or creative contributions to community organizations like our local chorale and LGBTQIA+ Center, my work is about capturing and conveying the beauty of every story. I want the world to know that my art is not just a career—it’s a passionate, ever-evolving narrative of overcoming challenges, celebrating diversity, and using creativity to make a meaningful impact.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my mom visits me and my fiance this summer, I’m treating her and anyone else that visits me to the very best my coastal town has to offer. I’d start with a deep dive into our picturesque downtown—strolling along cobblestone streets lined with historic homes and towering oaks draped in Spanish moss (it’s no wonder movies are filmed here!). For dining, I’d map out a culinary tour:
• For sushi, we’d hit up Yosake; for burgers, Rebellion is a must; and for fried chicken, nothing beats Rooster & The Crow.
• I’d also treat them to a grown-up grilled cheese experience at Cheesesmith, and for something truly unique, we’d enjoy the pirate vibes at Anne Bonney’s Bar & Grill—named after one of history’s notorious pirates who spent a lot of time here in Wilmington, among many other famous pirates.
• And no night out in Wilmington is complete without a visit to WTF (Whisky Tango Foxtrot), the best karaoke bar downtown for a fun, lively evening.
Our itinerary wouldn’t be all about food, though. I’d love to showcase our town’s rich history by visiting the Bellamy Mansion and the Burgwin-Wright House, where you really get a feel for Wilmington’s past. For a twist, we’d even take a ghost tour of downtown—merging history, fun, and a little bit of spookiness.
Beyond downtown, I’d make sure they experience the eclectic charm of the Cargo District—with its repurposed cargo containers now home to innovative restaurants and shops. Then we’d head out to the beaches: at Carolina Beach, we’d explore the boardwalk, ride the Ferris wheel, and indulge in the best donuts at Britts Donuts; while Wrightsville Beach offers a more tranquil escape perfect for relaxing by the ocean and enjoying some fresh seafood. And for a day of shopping and diverse dining, Mayfaire would definitely be on our list.
Every stop reflects why I love my town so much—a blend of history, culinary delights, vibrant local culture, and stunning natural beauty. It’s all about sharing a truly diverse and exciting experience that captures the heart and soul of Wilmington.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many to thank along the way, but if I had to pinpoint one, my mom would always be at the top of the list. From my early days as a kid who loved singing in church, putting on little plays, and drawing countless pictures, her unwavering support and encouragement meant everything. While I never fit the mold of the kid into sports or conventional activities, she always pushed me to follow my heart and explore my creative passions.
That said, I’ve also been lucky to cross paths with numerous teachers, mentors, and organizations that recognized and nurtured my creative spirit. Whether it was the community arts programs, my experiences at school and church, or the various creative teams I’ve been part of throughout my college years and my career, each has contributed in its own way to shaping who I am today. Their collective influence, along with my mom’s and partner’s steadfast love, continues to motivate me to push boundaries and use my talents to help others achieve their goals.
