We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity Davenport and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charity, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say that the most important factor behind the success of my brand is staying true to myself and my roots. My focus has always been to produce downhome tasting treats. You probably won’t see too many “bells and whistle” treats or cakes from me. I’ll leave the Spiderman and Paw Patrol cakes to the ones who have that niche. And that’s not knocking those types of cakes at all because it’s a wonderful talent and I definitely admire it, I just know it’s not my area of passion or expertise. I focus on desserts that remind you of grandma’s cookies baking on a Sunday afternoon. The “food for the soul” type of desserts that trigger the core childhood memories.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I consider Some’N Sweet my baby. It’s still getting nurtured so that it can continue to grow into something even more special. I got to where I am from simply following a passion. Many people know that baking was just a hobby for me in the beginning. Making treats here and there to share with others was just something I considered fun. I’ve always admired the people who took the leap and began a career of something that they were passionate about. With that in mind, I knew I should try to make something of my own craft. I think my biggest challenge thus far has been feeling like I don’t have as much time as I would like to give to this at the moment. Unfortunately, the way this economy is set up at the moment, I can’t afford to give up my full-time employment to focus solely on my side business. But, I’ve been making it work. Evenings and weekends have been dedicated to taking steps and soaking up knowledge on how to grow Some’N Sweet. This has definitely taught me that success doesn’t have to necessarily happen overnight. I’ve actually enjoyed the process of taking baby steps and working out the kinks to turn this into something extra special.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend coming to the area–assuming it’s someone I didn’t grow up with–I would definitely take them to see the small town of where I grew up–Plymouth, NC. I’m sure some of the Plymouth natives would probably say “Why would you bring anyone here? There’s not much to see.” But I think that when you grow up in small, rural towns like Plymouth, sometimes it’s easy to overlook both the potential and the beauty of it. The riverfront in downtown Plymouth is actually a beautiful sight to see. I’d also take them to see more of my roots in the good ol’ area of Piney Woods, NC. If we were lucky, we’d get to sit down with some of the older generations and listen to their amazing history of growing up in Piney Woods–and some of the scary legends, too! My late great grandmother, known as Sugar Pie, would tell stories of how different times were back then. How they raised their own food and how flour only cost a few cents. One of my goals is to incorporate some Piney Woods inspired recipes into my business. I already have a pie named after grandma Sugar Pie–and it’s just as sweet as she was. From there, a trip about and hour and a half up the street to the outer banks would be a must. If a low-key, relaxing beach trip is what you’re looking for–the outer banks is the place to go! You can get your dose of history at the Wright Brothers National Memorial, or check out some of the local eateries for some good seafood.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Credit has to go to my momma for this one. She’s set the example and I’ve tried to keep up in her footsteps. There are stories of her pulling up a chair or stepstool to the kitchen counter when she was only a few feet tall. While my grandmother was away at work and she was under the supervision of her older sister (who encouraged her curiosity and exploration), my mom would pull out the flour and eggs and experiment with recipes. Because of this passion, she always encouraged my curiosity when it came to baking. Whether she was whipping up cake mix for me to use in my easy bake oven or helping me with school science projects to see how cookies turned out with butter vs margarine, she’s always been super supportive. To this day, I still call her for tips or watch what she’s doing in the kitchen to learn as much as I can.
