We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I am no stranger to taking risks when it comes to my career and am a firm believer that with high risk comes high reward. From a young age, I knew the traditional college path was not for me. Only a few days after my eighteenth birthday, I moved away from my hometown just outside of Columbia, South Carolina to Wilmington, North Carolina and dove head first into cosmetology school. I’m strong willed, creative, and very goal driven so I knew I wanted to master my craft, but didn’t know exactly what that would look like. Fast forward a few years later, I found my niche in curly haircutting. I built a strong clientele and was surrounded by an incredible support system, but I wanted a change. I felt that I had outgrown the town I once thought I’d never leave, so I decided to take the risk and move to Charlotte. Things quickly began to fall into place for me better than they ever have and I knew that I landed exactly where I needed to be. Without these risks, I would not be where I am today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What most sets me apart from others is my willingness to share my knowledge. Since the beginning of my career I’ve loved sharing tips and tricks I learned with both my clients and fellow stylists. I believe this to be what pushed me further into the niche of curly hair cutting as well. What I do is all about helping people navigate and learn about caring for their natural texture. When you sit in my chair, it’s not just a haircut. You’ll learn why your hair does what it does and leave feeling confident with taking care of it moving forward. I recently took this a step further by beginning to hold classes at the salon where I work, Head Space Studio, for stylists who want to learn how to best serve their guests with natural texture. With education, I have a very down to earth approach. I strive to teach not just one show-y technique, but instead take time to give real life applications for multiple scenarios we encounter behind the chair.

It sounds cliche, but I got to where I am today through a lot of hard work and determination. People say that life is easy when you do what you love, but I respectfully disagree. When you love what you do, the work doesn’t stop when you leave at the end of the day. There have been many weeks where I have worked for 6-7 days in a row just to go home and watch haircutting videos and brainstorm more ideas of how I can grow more. I’m still in the process of building my business and the life I want for myself, but I am so grateful for where I am on this journey. You truly get out what you put in and I am so proud of the amount of effort I’ve put in to get where I am today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Charlotte has so many gems! I’m so proud of where I work so visiting the girls at Head Space would definitely have to be on the itinerary. Sarah, the owner, has curated the best vibes ever and I love when my friends get to experience it. Freedom park is easily one of my favorite spots here so a walk with my dog there is a must as well. We would also pop over to NoDA for food at Oh my Soul and drinks at Rosie’s Coffee & Wine Garden. I also love using friend visits as an excuse to go walk around Ikea so before their visit is over we’d have to take a trip there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to anyone who has ever taken a chance on me. To my mentors who took me in when all I had was a dream, to anyone who has ever sat in my chair, and to those who come to my classes and trust me with their education. I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many talented and inspiring people!
