We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlen Gedye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlen, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by the people in my life. They are go-getters and determined to make a lasting impact on whatever they do in life. They remind me to stay humble and to be myself, but to also take risks and make mistakes as that’s how we learn best.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography speaks to who I am as a person because I try to capture the real and special moments of life. Not only do I photograph people, but I photograph landscapes, nature, art, and the environments around us. I don’t necessarily think you need to have one niche as a photographer- being able to capture many different things showcases the creativity and perspective that you see surrounding you. I got to where I am today professionally by being persistent and just continuing to do what I love and what I’m passionate about. It wasn’t or hasn’t been easy- but I am always trying to learn along the way and make mistakes to get better. I want the world to know that doing what you love is more important than doing something that will just pay the bills or get you by. Passion and persistent and patience is the key.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them downtown Durham. Downtown Durham is booming with new breweries, eateries, and fun things to do, such as, walking Duke Botanical Gardens, visiting the Museum of Life & Science, walking the American Tobacco Trail, and checking out the architecture of Duke University. We would grab coffee from boutique coffee shop Cocoa Cinnamon, lunch from southern kitchen GRUB, and dinner at M Sushi. We would then head to the Durham Hotel rooftop for cocktails and chatting with locals in the area.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will give a shout-out to my amazing twin sister who is always persistent in chasing her dreams. She has a jewelry business and a champagne cart business. She is a hard worker and believes in making others feel good about themselves and the goals they’re trying to achieve.
