Meet Brett Phillips | Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brett Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brett, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was younger, I always knew that I wanted to pursue something creatively. The process of being inspired, having an idea, and creating was something that made me very happy. Initially I didn’t know that it would be music that I’d find the biggest passion for; I enjoyed writing, drawing, and coming up with stories and songs as a child. I remember finding a typewriter in my grandfathers basement and excitedly writing on it, as if I was creating my own books for people to read like the ones I had on my bookshelf. It wasn’t until the age of 12 that I curiously picked up my older sister’s guitar that I knew where to put all my creative energy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve began to pursue music professionally at age 15 when I started giving lessons out of my parents house. I charged $40 a month, and somehow managed to accumulate 15 students of varying ages. It taught me that I could use my passion to make a little extra cash, but it also proved to me just how difficult monetizing something you love could be. It’s no secret that most musicians don’t make a lucrative living, and often times have erratic schedules and long hours for little pay. I lived that life for several years. Now, I’m able to separate my professional life working at an engineering firm from my music life, and it’s taken the pressure off of using music solely as my primary source of income.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the Fayetteville area, you have to stop downtown. There are lots of unique local businesses and eateries that are unique to the area. Catch a Woodpecker’s baseball game. Antonella’s Italian Ristorante is a must. Heckler Brewing Co. is a great local brewery. The Cape Fear Botanical Garden is a great scenic stop. For entertainment, Gilbert Theater and Cape Fear Regional Theater are great venues. And if I’m playing, come see me!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my story to my wife, for believing in me and continually encouraging me to pursue my dreams.
