Meet Bobbie Johnson | Cotton Candy Lady

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bobbie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sweet Carolina Delights came about as my daughter and I tossed around different business ideas. From a bagel shop, to face painting, to cotton candy and concession items, Sweet Carolina Delights was soon created. We operate a mobile business that specializes in hand spinning cotton candy at public and private events with other delightful concession items to come for our sweet customers.
Along the way, there have definitely been bumps in the road along our small business journey. The biggest challenge has been learning the process of establishing our business and delegating tasks to the appropriate professionals. In the beginning, I took on every single role. I mean I was the event curator, content creator, bookkeeper, inventory person, researcher, and cotton candy clean up lady all in one. I have learned the importance of networking with other professionals and building a community of professionals to provide assistance in their area of expertise.
We stand out by offering more than just the traditional flavors, such as banana pudding, strawberry shortcake, passion fruit and exploring cocktail inspired flavors for adult events. We offer cotton candy party favors, such as containers, push-up pops, cotton candy cakes, and cotton candy glitter clouds that make beverages shimmer and sparkle. A fan favorite is our Pickle-Rito, which is a whole dill pickle wrapped in cotton candy with the option of a topping or two or none at all. We’re working on incorporating delightful flavors of popcorn and adding a twist to traditional lemonade, so stay tuned.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In a week-long trip there are a few places that would be a must to visit. With two children the trip would definitely include a trip to Skyzone for trampoline fun, rock climbing at The Climbing Place, Putt Putt Fun Center Hope Mills, Fascinate-U Children’s Museum, and a walk around beautiful downtown Fayetteville to enjoy the art and the new J. Cole mural.
On any day there are wonderful places for food and drinks. Some of our favorites are Poke Bowl Fayetteville, Alpaca, and Just Coffee Cafe in Liberty Square. For a southern dish we like to enjoy Fuller’s Old Fashion BBQ, Uptown Chicken and Waffles, and The Friends Table. An absolute must during the week would be a bowl of ramen at Ichi Kaku. For a sweet treat our go to is Sweet Frog for frozen yogurt.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my parents, Robert and Arlene Johnson, who deserve credit for instilling the entrepreneurial spirit within me during my childhood. My dad is retired from the U.S. Army and he ran a HO Slot Car Racing business. It was a huge electric track in a trailer and when the doors opened guests would pay to race using a handheld remote. My job was to return the cars to the track when they flew off. My mother and her friend owned a shoe store in the flea market and I got to make sales, restock inventory, and see two female entrepreneurs run their business. I also got to have my own shoe fashion show when it wasn’t busy.
Mrs. Viola Angel, owner of the Poki Bowl Fayetteville, Ms. LaShayla Simpson, owner of The Moxx Box, and Mr. Ricardo Murphy with the Fayetteville Technical Community College Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Small Business and Cooler than Cold 2.0, have all played a role in mentoring me through my journey of running a successful business. Each has allowed me to learn from their business, shared valuable knowledge, and I am so grateful to have had their mentorship.
