Meet Betsy Sauls | Wedding Cake Designer and Bakery Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Betsy Sauls and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Betsy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This business started as a side hobby for me while I was teaching full time. It was something I enjoyed and something that allowed me to make a little extra fun money. When the business started growing I was faced with the question of it I wanted to keep doing this on the side or if this was something I could turn into a career. I wasn’t overly in love with that I was doing for my full time job so when the opportunity came up to do Around the Table full time I really weighed out my options on how this could look. And the rest just kind of happened naturally – once I decided I didn’t want to keep teaching it was like the plan was put in motion and just took off from there!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am what I like to call “Youtube taught” when it comes to cakes. I don’t have a degree, I don’t have certifications, I didn’t take classes, I just knew I loved watching cake decorating videos and I wanted to do that. So I just found some people online and saw how they decorated cakes and just went from there. A lot of trial and error, a lot of making mistakes and having total failures and just learning what works and what doesn’t work. I feel like the best thing I did was reach out to other bakers and just ask questions. I had idols on Instagram that I loved and I wasn’t scared to DM them and tell them how much I loved them and ask about certain techniques or stacking wedding cakes or delivery details – and those bakers were absolutely incredible in helping me. Which in turn has led me to be extremely helpful for other bakers reaching out asking me questions – I want to be just as helpful to others as my baker idols were to me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here is Nash County our big thing is the Rocky Mount Mills – such a neat area with pizza places, breweries, tiny home hotels, coffee shops, it’s just such a neat area and that would definitely be a fun stop. And then really anywhere in Raleigh. Nashville is so small that we really go to Raleigh a lot, that’s where all the fun is!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband without a doubt deserves the biggest shoutout I could give. This business was my baby, it was my thing and I really asked him to sacrifice his career to come help me and he did it with no questions asked. My husband is a chef with a culinary degree and 10 years of restaurant experience. He worked his way up from a dishwasher to line cook to sous chef to head chef over the years and was head chef at a college when we started this business. When things got to the point I couldn’t handle them by myself he sacrificed his life work to come help me. He is my right hand, he’s my partner in life and in business and there’s no doubt I couldn’t do this without him!
