Meet Avery Gall | Freelance Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Gall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Avery, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am currently studying graphic design at East Carolina University, so starting a freelance design business came naturally to me. I love the creative freedom that freelance work gives me, and bringing my client’s visions to life brings me so much joy. Most of the work I am doing right now includes logo designs and social media post designs for small businesses.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From a young age, I’ve always been an artistic person, so I love that my career allows me to be creative every day. What I especially enjoy about graphic design is that every project poses a unique challenge for me to solve, whether that be reaching the right audience or conveying a particular emotion.
My favorite projects to work on are those that relate back to the arts in some way, and right now I am excited about breaking into the music industry as a designer for artists. Music is a big inspiration for me, so I have a lot of fun designing album covers, band posters, and logos for bands, solo artists, or studios.
Getting into the music/entertainment industry is definitely a challenge, and I am still working toward my goals. However, I can say that the most important part of getting my foot in the door has been getting out into my community and building meaningful relationships with my clients and collaborators.
Something unique about my work is the balance I create between experimentation and quality of craft. I pride myself on exploring a wide range of techniques but always bring great attention to detail to my final products.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Something I love about Raleigh is that you get all the benefits of living in a city but with the warmth and friendliness of a small town. If I had a friend visiting for a week who had never been here before, it would be difficult to choose just a few things to do.
But I think some of the must-sees in Raleigh are the North Carolina Museum of Art, the William B. Umstead State Park, and The North Carolina State Farmers Market. To grab a bite to eat, we would definitely need to stop by Poole’side Pies, Sushi Nine, Boulted Bread, and Beasley’s Chicken + Honey. To finish the week off, I would give my friend a taste of Raleigh’s nightlife at Legends Nightclub.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to the graphic design faculty at both Wake Technical Community College and East Carolina University’s School of Art and Design for shaping me into the designer I am today. These professors have always been supportive of my work and truly care about student success.
