We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashleyh Yemi’a and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashleyh, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote of all time is “I rather be loved for who I am, than to be loved for who I’m not.” I love this saying because it’s humbling and always reminds me to stay grounded in who I am and what I stand for. Through experiences I’ve quickly learned, the moment I try to be anything else, it makes life way harder than it has to be.

Applying this quote in my everyday life use to be hard because media and society create standards and/or a makes us to believe a certain “look” is what it takes to make it in life or to receive the best things in life. The reality is, almost all 0f what we see on social media and in general when it comes to the world of entertainment are mostly lies. While some are really living the life they show, enough of us really aren’t. I had to learn the hard way what they mean by “the spirit of comparison is the thief of joy” because, I use to struggle with that, How did I overcome this? A good friend named Reginald told me one day, if you would just be yourself and silence the noise 0f who the world says you should be, you will, win EVERY SINGLE TIME….He was right and I’ve leaned my hat on that ever since !

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to my craft, my authenticity, energy and love for serving others is what sets me apart. My mission in life is to lead with love and to make it my business to bring the best out of others. This isn’t always easy though, because sometimes that means I have to pour from an empty cup. On those days, I always go back to my “why” and it always grounds me. A few lessons I had to learn were; Identify, understand and always have that “why” in mind so that tough days wont’ run you away from your dreams, the essence of getting out my own way and learning to trust the process and not just say it. When it comes to my brand, I just want the world to know that with me, you’ll get more than what you book for. I am an experience.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One specific day I would take them to brunch at Metro Diner, then head to Frankie’s or Rush Hour for some go car fun, follow up with a dinner at J. Alexander and then a night out at dopest African/Reggae night club Farotage Nation Lounge. being honest, I love being at home so fun things to do around the house would also be a part of the week. A cool activity we would do would be something like axe throwing at Crazy Axe, taking stop at the rage room to release some built up stress and then heading downtown to Durham to try out some amazing food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to shoutout a lot of my success to all the youth I’ve been responsible for in many different capacities. When they see me win, they encourage me to keep pushing and a lot of times they serve as a reminder that if I fail, there is a whole community of kids that may follow my lead and that is NOT AN OPTION. I have to especially shout the youth of Springfield Baptist church, their parents and my two God-daughters Jahmiah and Harmony. How they feel about me keeps me going, and when they individually share how they feel about me and who I’ve been for them in random conversations, that motivates me to continue working on being a better version of myself daily.
