We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As a young African American female chandler and mother, my journey is unique and relatable to many people who may not often see themselves represented in the entrepreneurial world. This authenticity allows me to connect with customers on a deeper level. When I share my story, challenges, and successes, it’s not just a marketing ploy; it’s a genuine and relatable narrative that creates trust and loyalty.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Moore Scents Candle Company is more than just a candle business; it’s a passion project and a labor of love. Owned by a Black woman entrepreneur, our candles are handcrafted with care, ensuring that every product that leaves our workshop is a work of art. I got here by realizing I no longer want to make money based on someone else’s standards. The decision was very easy but the process was hard. I have learned to trust myself and the genuine people around me to keep me going.

 

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh on the first day, it will go like this..Morning: Explore North Hills for upscale shopping and dining. Lunch: Dine at one of the many excellent restaurants in the North Hills area.
Afternoon: Visit the Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh (CAM Raleigh).
Dinner: Enjoy a stylish dinner at Death & Taxes. Day 2 Morning: Hike and explore the natural beauty of Umstead State Park.
Lunch: Pack a picnic or visit a local deli for a relaxed lunch at the park.
Afternoon: Spend the afternoon paddle boarding or kayaking at Lake Johnson Park.
Dinner: Head to the Raleigh Beer Garden for dinner and a wide selection of craft beers. Day 3 Morning: Start the day with a visit to the North Carolina Museum of Art for a dose of culture and art.
Lunch: Head to Morgan Street Food Hall for a diverse culinary experience with various food vendors.
Afternoon: Explore downtown Raleigh’s historic sites like the State Capitol and the City Market.
Dinner: Enjoy a farm-to-table dinner at Poole’s Diner for a taste of Southern cuisine. I would also let her choose some things to do as well.

 

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children are the heartbeat of my life and the source of my unwavering motivation. They are the ones who keep me going, pushing me to strive for success and embrace life’s challenges with determination and resilience.
