Meet Anna Vaughn Kincheloe | Fine Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Vaughn Kincheloe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna Vaughn, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe what’s contributed to any success I’ve had is recognizing that the work I do mostly revolves around relationships. There is of course the relationship between the elements and principles of design in creating art, but I think what’s more significant is the is the overlapping relationship between the artist, the work and the viewer. I care about the connection another viewer may experience with what I create, and therefore, in some way, I get to have a relationship with them because of it. Creation is about connection, and I think we all yearn to connect with one another.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My series work is a reflection of free-spirited moments, often with a transportive quality and with connections between elements that encourage the viewer to wander as well. I continue to be drawn to expansive, wide-open spaces — particularly horizon lines — and attempt to evoke this sense of freedom in my paintings. The created world around is most definitely a muse for me. Expression, color and movement are also important aspects to my work.
Overall, my career has been a steady climb without too many bumps along the way. I’ve heard it said before, but I do think being authentic to self and reacting to difficulties with objectivity and perspective have been lessons gained.
As I said before, I think art is really about connection and I’ve begun to view the work I do as a relationship-builder and way to connect with others just as much as it is a means of personal expression.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana for drinks (the spicy green marg!) and dinner. (the Pad Thai, the Lettuce Wraps, the Shanghai Moon Cakes!) Would catch a show or concert at DPAC or Carolina Theatre in Durham. Take a long hike through Umstead State Park — one of my favorite things to do! Pop into Amelia’s Flower’s for a bouquet to brighten the day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well, I have to acknowledge my parents first and foremost. Ever since my childhood, they have continued encouraging me to pursue my interests. They said “okay!” when I wanted to live in Australia for two years to finish school; they bought me a new guitar when I wanted to perform live music with a band; and they never once told me a career in art was an unworthy endeavor. They have also led by example in trusting Jesus Christ who continues to reveal fullness of life and expand my creative horizons.
I’m also extremely grateful for all of the artistic minds I’ve encountered over the years — from my peers in art school to the community of artists and designers (who are really more like friends) supporting each other in the Raleigh area. It’s pretty incredible to witness all of the varied and unique perspectives and talents.
And I would be extremely remiss if I did not dedicate a part of this to my husband, Hatcher — who commissioned me to do a painting years ago in hopes that it would lead to a first date. And here we are… the painting now hangs happily in our family room where our kids play.
