We had the good fortune of connecting with A’myrah Bates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A’Myrah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time learning the human body. I started with Athletic training, moved to OT and PT then tried Group fitness, finally ending in corporate finance. After getting pregnant with my first I noticed a need for moms of color to have a safe environment for birth. An anchor to voice their concerns and be listened to. I started my doula career while still holding my 9-5 profession. After two years of gaining a solid client base and partners, I was able to venture out to have Doula work as my full-time career.

What should our readers know about your business?
Ase Doula Care is a birth and postpartum doula practice. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for parent during their pregnancy, Advocate and support them during birth, and hold their hand through the postpartum journey. We aid with hospital, home and birth center births. All of our doulas are trained in medicated, unmedicated births and spinning babies techniques. Fun prenatal offers such as bellycasting, mothering ceremonies, Sound Bowl meditation, etc. Traditional after care is also offered such as Closing of the bones ceremony, Placenta Encapsulation and bellybidning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Typically, when we go out, we like outdoor activities. Freedom Park has a lot of great events, we enjoy the atmosphere at NC tavern.

Sometimes we go hiking at crowders and the white-water center. We have fairy picnics in the backyard. Unfortunately, we are big home bodies and prefer to get together and cook verses going out. We try to have our mom dates together at least once a month.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank all the people who have support me throughout my Journey as a Doula. Kenyettea Garth, Heidi Synderburn, Collin Pearsons, Sakina Ohuru, All the loving Midwives at Providence Obgyn , Lugina Grider, Cynthia Woods. My friends (Yazmen J, India C, Chamme,Shatoya,Britney )and family (mom, dad sister and brother) who have made sure my children’s lives stayed on track and supported me with the hard times and self doubt.
