Meet Alexia Chianis | Candle Maker and Solo Mom

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexia Chianis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
While having a quality product is essential, it’s my commitment to customer experience that truly sets my business apart. Building genuine relationships has been one of the biggest factors behind my success.
Every order gets a handwritten note—a small but meaningful way to show gratitude. For local customers, I make it a point to personally thank them, whether through a thoughtful text or an in-person conversation. This year, I took things a step further by purchasing beautiful pottery pieces from my friend Jen at Salt of the Earth and gifting them to select customers as a token of appreciation.
For my customers, it’s not just about saving money (though I do offer a great rewards program and a money back happiness guarantee); it’s about creating real connections. Investing in these relationships, one person at a time, has made all the difference in turning customers into loyal supporters and friends.
It’s also important to recognize that there are times things do not go according to plan. When that happens, I address the situation head-on and make it right.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a single mom of two young girls, life was a constant hustle. I was freelance writing, chasing deadlines, and feeling stretched thin. One night, while tucking in my 4-year-old, she asked for a second bedtime story. Frustrated, I said no—I had to get back to work. Her disappointment hit me hard. That moment was a breaking point. I knew I needed a change but had no clue where to start.
So, I did what I always do when life feels overwhelming—I called my best friend. She invited me to Maine. I hiked, camped, and soaked in the rugged beauty of the coast. One early morning, on a run through a tiny, charming town, I saw a huge sign that asked, “What are you doing with your life?” It stopped me in my tracks. I don’t know, I thought, but I’m here to figure it out.
The sign was on a candle company, and in that instant, something clicked. That’s it—I’m starting a candle business, I decided. Each night after that, I’d hunker down in my tent, and scribble ideas in a tiny notebook. Forget that I’d never made a candle before, for some reason I knew this was my path.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Beaufort is a coastal gem packed with charm, history, and amazing eats! Here’s how I’d plan the ultimate day there:
We’d kick things off with toes in the sand, soaking up the stunning view of wild horses roaming Shackleford Banks—an absolute bucket-list sight. After that, it’s time to refuel with lunch and a signature drink on the deck at Stillwater (Front Street Grill), where the waterfront vibes are unbeatable.
Next up, let’s dive into Beaufort’s rich history, starting with a spooky stroll through the Old Burying Grounds—creepy in all the right ways. Then hop aboard the iconic Double-Decker Bus Tour, run by the Beaufort Historic Association. Trust me, it’s a must-do!
Beaufort is super walkable, but renting a golf cart from Sinclair’s adds a little extra fun if you’re feeling adventurous.
We’ll cap off our historical exploration with a visit to the Maritime Museum—a true local treasure showcasing tales of seafaring and shipwrecks.
As the sun sets, it’s time for dinner at City Kitchen, where the food is as stunning as the view. Wrap up the night with live music at one of Beaufort’s iconic spots. For an insider vibe, hit Backstreet Pub or Cru—perfect places to unwind and soak in Beaufort’s laid-back spirit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Two incredible, fearless women took a chance on me when I had nothing but ambition and a promise. My success today is a direct reflection of their trust, mentorship, and belief in what I could create.
First up, Kim Bell, the powerhouse behind Inn on Turner. Kim is a visionary when it comes to redefining guest experiences—always looking for ways to elevate every detail of a stay. She gave me my first big break by trusting me to develop an exclusive line of signature toiletries, including shampoo, soap, lotion, and candles. I had no portfolio, no proof of success, just a promise that I’d pour my heart into creating products worthy of her guests. Seven years later? We’re still going strong.
Kim’s passion for supporting local businesses and her relentless innovation continues to inspire me. One of her latest ideas? A pillow menu where guests can select the firmness level they prefer for the perfect night’s sleep. We recently added custom pillow sprays to complement this offering, blending restful scents to complete the luxurious experience. It’s small details like these that make Kim—and the Inn on Turner—truly unforgettable.
Next, meet Cindy Bunch—a warm, supportive force with a can-do attitude. As the powerhouse behind the Olde Beaufort Farmers’ Market, she sets a high bar for vendors. Eight years ago, I nervously applied, knowing acceptance wouldn’t be easy. But she gave me that chance, and it changed everything. The hands-on experience with customers helped me refine my products and build a loyal following that still supports me today. Cindy’s quiet but constant encouragement has been invaluable, both in business and beyond. Without that opportunity, I wouldn’t be nearing a decade in business.
