We had the good fortune of connecting with Aimee-rose Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aimee-Rose, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Overtime my work life balance has shifted with the growth of my family. I started doing my painting events when I was also just starting out as a full time art educator. Juggling a full time job and a side hustle was really difficult at first, and took me awhile to find my groove. As I got older and my husband and I began growing our little family I decided to leave my full time teaching job to stay at home with our children. I continued to work my painting events and even grew my business to host at new venues. I also worked hard at finding more freelance work I could do at home with my kids like custom paintings and illustrations. I went from juggling to (outside) jobs to now juggling full time stay at home parenting with my freelance art business. My work life balance is always evolving and I enjoy how much it shapes my need for self discipline and patience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art has evolved so much over time. The work I enjoy creating the most would be my illustration work. I love being asked to create something unique and personal to someone because that means they have seen what I can do and they trust my skillset. My work is very stylized and I love leaning into line work and flat colors using watercolor, acrylic paint, or alcohol markers. I’ve been working as an artist for almost a decade so it’s been something I’ve had to work really hard at. Social media was not as big when I was first starting out as an artist so it’s been a tool I’ve been learning to help my business continue to grow, but before then I was truly just relying on networking in person and that limited my growth as a young artist for sure! Now as a 30 year old mother I’m finding myself having to take more time to learn how to utilize technology to network further and advertise my work and my events. I think the utilization of social media and content creation has been my biggest challenge in this phase of my work. Finding avenues to advertise and showcase my work on a larger scale through social media has been a huge learning curve but it’s also been so rewarding to have a larger audience. I love what I do and I hope when people see my work (whether on social media or in person) that they can truly feel how much I love my job.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places in and around Charlotte would be focused on local coffee shops, parks, and consignment/thrift retail spots. I love vintage and antique finds so I always love showing people around the various antique malls around the area. I also love a good food hall. If the weather is nice I like spending time outside at places like Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden or the US National Whitewater Center.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to every single person who has commissioned custom art from me or has attended one of my painting events. As a small business I am able to take care of myself and my family with the money I make creating art. It’s a huge privilege to get to call this my job. I dreamed of being a professional artist when I was a child and I’m living that dream! I’m living that dream because of the love and support of all of my friends and family and those who support my work.
