How did you come up with the idea for your business?

It takes a lot more than an idea to build a business, but there can’t be a business without the idea. So we asked folks who’ve built wonderful businesses to tell us about how they came up with the idea in the first place.
In mid-2014, I adopted an eight month-old cattle dog mix named Bubba Gump. I remember having to convince his foster mom that my goals of becoming a trainer were so close, and given this pup was very, very nervous, he was going to need a different kind of person for his Forever Home. My business partner, Jen, and I grew up with incredible hostess role models (in our moms and grandmothers). We are lucky to work with artisans around the world (primarily central Mexico) to create these pieces. It might sound silly to someone who entertains regularly, but for someone who is hesitant to open their home to friends, having “the right pieces” can make all the difference. Read More>>

I still do this and I love it, but in 2024 I got the idea to start my own platform. As much as I enjoyed working with others and contributing to publications, editors ultimately had control of what I could cover, when I could cover it and even how I could cover it. Our business idea goes back to 2013, when my business partner and I were visiting friends in L.A. and learned how easy succulents were to grow. Back home on the east coast, an idea was born to partner succulents with coastal inspired vessels, mainly Ball jars that we had painted pastel coastal colors and sanded to give a weathered, coastal look. We sold these at farmers markets and craft fairs, and were soon discovered by a local buyer from Whole Foods Market’s floral department. Our wholesale division launched and the business quickly grew.
