We had the good fortune of connecting with Chiquita “DJ Shadez” Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chiquita “DJ Shadez”, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting Shine Bright Entertainment came naturally to me. I have degrees in business and have owned several businesses over the years—from trucking companies to custom apparel and eyewear. So entrepreneurship is something I’ve always been passionate about and comfortable with.

What makes this business different is my love for music. At one point, I actually wanted to become a band director. Although life took me in a different direction, that passion never left. I played several instruments growing up and have always been a music lover—I’d choose music over television any day.

One day, I decided to finally pursue that dream and learn how to DJ. It felt like the perfect way to blend my love for music with my business background. I combined my entrepreneurial experience with my musical passion, and Shine Bright Entertainment was born. Since then, the business has taken off, and I’ve truly enjoyed creating unforgettable experiences for others through music.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Shine Bright Entertainment is a full-service DJ company that provides the soundtrack to life’s most meaningful celebrations—from weddings, baby showers, graduations, and birthday parties to corporate events and festivals. We don’t just play music; we help create memories. And sometimes, it’s not even about the music. We also provide professional audio equipment for events like speaker panels, corporate functions, and community forums.

One of our proudest moments was being part of major public events like the Charlotte Gay Pride Festival, along with various community events and festivals. These opportunities allow us to connect with people from all walks of life, and that’s what Shine Bright is all about—bringing people together through the power of sound.

What sets me apart is my professionalism and my focus on truly listening to the client. I don’t believe in telling clients what their event should look or sound like. Instead, I listen to their vision and bring it to life. Every event is different, and I pride myself on being flexible, attentive, and intentional about making each experience unique.

Getting to this point hasn’t been easy. Like many entrepreneurs, the toughest part was getting my name and brand out into the world, especially as someone new to the industry. In the beginning, you don’t have testimonials or a track record, so it’s hard to gain trust. But I’ve learned that once people do trust you—and you deliver with excellence—they become your biggest advocates. Word of mouth is powerful.

There have definitely been challenges. Competing with established DJs and companies can feel overwhelming. But I’ve learned that not every client is for you, and that’s okay. Staying true to who I am and the quality I offer is more important than trying to be everything to everyone. I continue to build, learn, and grow every day—and I’m still working on expanding Shine Bright Entertainment’s presence and reputation.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me and my brand, it’s this: We do this out of love. I genuinely love music, people, and creating unforgettable experiences. Shine Bright Entertainment isn’t just a business—it’s a dream that blends passion, purpose, and professionalism.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1 – Southern Welcome
We’d kick things off with breakfast at Café South. It’s got that classic, home-cooked vibe—just like eating at grandma’s house. Think fluffy pancakes, hearty omelets, and all the comfort food you could ask for.

Day 2 – Selfies & Soul Food
After filling up, we’d head to Picture Project CLT Selfie Museum—one of my favorite creative spots in the city. It’s the perfect place to let loose and capture some fun, Instagram-worthy memories.

Later, we’d stop at Sol Delish, a local favorite where the food is always hitting. Whether you’re in the mood for wings, pasta, or soul food with a twist, you can’t go wrong here.

Day 3 – Vibes & DJs
For the nightlife, Stats Restaurant & Bar is a must. It’s one of the go-to spots in Charlotte where you’ll find a great crowd, good drinks, and incredible music. I’ve got some DJ brothers who spin there every week, so you know the energy is always right.

Day 4–6 – Explore the City
We’d check out local attractions like Camp North End for art, food trucks, and live entertainment. The Rail Trail is perfect for walking, biking, and exploring cool stops along the light rail. We’d probably squeeze in a visit to the Harvey B. Gantt Center or Bechtler Museum of Modern Art for some cultural vibes.

Day 7 – Chill & Reflect
To wind down, we’d hit up Romare Bearden Park for a relaxing picnic or some laid-back people-watching. It’s a great spot to reflect on the week, laugh over the memories, and maybe even plan the next trip back.

In my view, the best thing about this area is the people—fun, creative, and full of life. There’s always something happening, and no matter your vibe—chill or turnt up—Charlotte’s got something for you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to take a moment to shout out several incredible people who poured into me—both in my younger years and in my more “mature” years (yes, I said it! 😄).

Mr. Anthony S. Jones, my junior high school band director, was one of the first to see potential in me. He didn’t just teach me music—he showed me that my trumpet could take me places. He gave me the opportunity to march with a college band while I was still in high school, and that experience made me feel like I could do anything and go anywhere.

Next up is Brandon Mosely, aka B-Man. A phenomenal person and mentor, B-Man helped me transition from a band background to DJing. He took the foundation I had from years of playing instruments and helped me apply it to turntables and controllers. He challenged me early on, saying, “You can be a bedroom DJ, or you can go out there and bless people with your talents.” That moment sparked something in me, and I chose to step out.

A huge shoutout also goes to OBIA Studio’s Chuck Polo and DJ Krazy T. These two have played a major role in pushing me forward in the DJ industry. Every Wednesday, they host a DJ Camp that I’ve faithfully attended for the past two years. Through this, I’ve received hands-on experience and real-world training on how to prepare for and handle different types of gigs.

Special Special Shout Out ❤️

I want to give a special shout out to my amazing wife, Talaya Thomas, and my family for their unwavering love, support, and belief in me. As I continue to pursue my entrepreneurial journey, vision, and dreams, I know none of this would be possible without the solid support system I have at home.

The truth is, people don’t always see the sacrifices that a spouse and family make when someone chooses the entrepreneurial path. Late nights, early mornings, missed events, and time away — it takes strength, patience, and unconditional love.

Thank you, Talaya, for sharing me with the world, for being my rock, and for standing beside me through it all. I appreciate you and love you deeply. 🙏🏽❤️

I’m deeply grateful for everyone who has poured into me throughout this journey. I truly consider myself blessed—and I don’t take a single bit of it for granted.
