We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Crowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have been capturing my family and friends important milestones for years. When I became a parent, I spent so much time taking photos of my babies. After many discussions, my mom surprised me with my first DSLR and I started my journey. I realized that I could combine my love of meeting people and photography – the idea was born. I started with free sessions and before long I had created a business. I have had the honor of documenting almost every milestone has to offer (except birth) and it is such a privilege. I have many clients that I see grow year after year and I am so thankful.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Photography has many different styles and mine leans more to real life coloring. I love that I can take photos that show connection and emotion, and it’s preserved for forever.

I have had a lot of support to get to where I am today. I started in my little corner of the world, charging unsustainable prices. I lacked the confidence and information to charge what I need to survive. Without the help of other local, amazing photographers I would have burnt out a while ago. We have a community over competition approach with many local photographers and I am so thankful. They have helped me with business questions, referred clients to me and even helped me edit when I had a death in the family. They are Amazing women and I am so thankful to know them, even if just online!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
North Carolina is a beautiful state! We have the luxury of the ocean and mountains all within a drivable distance. I have recently fallen in love with New Bern. It is gorgeous and so full of history.

Locally I would take them to Lucky 32 or the Blind Pelican. Both are delicious, local restaurants. We would follow up with coffee from wake oasis.

If I could convince them, hiking in Raven rock is gorgeous!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My late grandmother, “Nana” and mother “Mary Tassone” for pushing me to chase my dreams and buying my first camera.

My husband “Michael Crowell” and my best friend “Ashley Walls” for continuous love and support. They push me to be authentically myself and remind me daily that I am worth it.
